There are so many things to love about blogging. Blogging is a great way to document our ideas and life journey, helpful tips, and overall is just an awesome creative outlet. Likewise, blogging has taught me many things about myself and blogging in general. If you haven’t already, take a look at my post Reflections After Blogging For a Month. It’s one of my earlier posts but the points I brought out are still just as relevant as today! I am so glad I decided to jump into blogging, after years and years of doubting and contemplating.
Blogging is also wonderful in that you gain knowledge about different subjects like beauty, travel food, fitness, etc. This is the beauty of the blogging community – there are so many lovely blogs with various niches! Over the past several months, I have learned so much and feel like I am more “in the know” because I’m keeping up with other bloggers’ posts about certain topics! This blog post will cover things I didn’t know before blogging.
I didn’t know about
- Wearing SPF on my face whenever I go outdoors. I only ever put on SPF when at the beach! It’s okay, you can say I live under a rock.
- The names of popular cosmetic brands. If you know me, I honestly know nothing about cosmetic stuff because I’m not a makeup gal. Thanks to all the beauty bloggers I engage with, however, I know what cosmetic brands are really popular. Now I even know about some smaller indie brands! It’s honestly so cool. I especially love reading Beauty posts from The Newbury Girl. Check her out!
- The extent and depth of mental health awareness. It’s so easy to live in your own bubble and not be aware of such things, especially if you’re only looking at face value, or from the outside. With that said, when I undergo any mental health breakdowns, it’s also all too easy to try and cast them aside, for fear of being judged and seen as different. It’s very comforting to read about other people’s experiences and what they do to cope! I always enjoy reading mental health related posts from Chloe Chats and Little Blog of Positivity – they are always so uplifting!
- The huge lot that are stationary addicts! Again, this goes back to being “stuck in a bubble” and feeling isolated, but meeting so many people and reading about their blogs makes me feel more connected to others who love stationary as much as I do, if not more! My favorite bloggers from these are definitely Hello Bexa and Bournemouth Girl. The kind of things they find always blow me away.
- All the cool places around the world. I don’t go out on vacation much. The last time I legit went somewhere (not just around town) was last summer in Canada, and the last time before that was when I was in eighth grade. I have no idea how so many people manage to go on vacation several times in a year when I can’t even manage to go on one annually! But I digress. I get to live vicariously through these bloggers who share their traveling experiences in Spain, Iceland, Turkey, Bali, Japan, and other places!
- Pinterest isn’t just for fun. It’s actually a legit powerful tool that can be used to increase your blog traffic! It just blows my mind.
What are some things you didn’t know before you started blogging?
Thanks for reading! Until then ♡

I love how blogging brings people together! I also love that I learn so much about life in general when I read other people’s blogs. Oh man, I can totally relate to you about the cosmetic brands and fashion brands in general. OHHH yes!!! I didn’t think that mental health was a big deal until recent years. Blogging helped with it big time. I always loved reading up about Bexa’s stationery haul, hehe. All of these travel bloggers make me want to get up and spend some money on life experiences. Thanks for sharing this list!
Nancy ♥ exquisitely.me
Haha YES I get so jealous sometimes because I read about other people’s adventures and I want to have the same fun! Bexa’s stationary posts are dangerous because I wanna buy the stuff she gets!
I love this Geraldine and thanks so much for the mention! Two things I’ve learned in my year of blogging – there is a whole wide world out there. I THINK I was living in a bubble before! Secondly, I’ve learned a ton about internet marketing, although I still have loads more to learn. And yes, pinterest, who knew?!
You’re welcome Alison! I definitely feel like I was in my own world and very isolated so this is a great way to feel like I’m out and about …but not LOL. Omg I still have so much to learn about the marketing biz and Pinterest!
hey Geraldine- great post! I’d say that i’m learning How to run my own race, and giving up the COMPARISON trap (i say slowly learning, because i’m human…haha).
I’m also learning more about the discipline of writing. That has always been a huge stRuggle. Also: progress is better than perfection, and the biggest lesson learned so far is that this community is amazing! I am trying to put myself out there more. It isn’t easy, but it will be worth it in the end. ❤️
Thanks so much Susan!! It’s hard to compare yourself sometimes, I give in here and there! You are totally right, it’s great to see how far we’ve progressed. 🙂
I’ve definitely learned a lot about things I didn’t know because there are bloggers with so many different niches! I find it so interesting to read anything from travel to mental health. I wasn’t aware of all the hard work that went into blogging too and it isn’t just writing, but things like promoting and photography too. Loved this post!x
This is such an awesome idea for a blog post! I loved reading this! Thank you for the mention, that was so sweet of you, i love stationery and Its so nice to meet other stationery loves! Thank you for sharing!
I was expecting this to be blogging related things like photography and SEO etc when I first clicked on this but it was such a pleasant surprise to see that it was actually things you’ve learnt about/ from other bloggers. The mental health thing was the same for me too in a way, especially things like self-care. Weirdly, I didn’t know people loved bath bombs THAT MUCH before I started blogging. It’s funny what you can pick up by widening your circle x

Haha yes I was not sure how to properly word the title without making people think about SEO and all that stuff! The bath bombs thing really was a surprise for me too, I never knew it was so popular and so loved!
I love this! I totally agree with you that blogging has definitely taught me so much! Personally, it’s taught me so much beauty stuff than I ever learned growing up. Love that you mentioned Bexa, I love reading her blog – it always puts a smile on my face! Yay for blogging!
☼ cabin twenty-four
Totally! Beauty is soo out of my league and I practically knew nothing about it before reading other bloggers’ thoughts on products. I am soo glad I am at least somewhat more informed! Yass love reading Bexa’s! Blogging is seriously so great, we have so many good things to take away from it 🙂
Lovely post Gerladine. You are absolutely right about learning so many things by reading blogs from so many different niche. I have learned about so many new brands, learned about self care, mindfulness and so much more. Yes Pinterest blows my mind too. 🙂 (I wonder why I am typing in all caps) 🙂
Via | http://glossnglitters.com
Thank you Via! Haha there’s so much to learn. I’m so sorry it’s how my theme is but you’re not typing all in caps!
I completely agree! In fact I’d go a bit further and say that blogging connects people in a way that other social media platforms is unable because it allows you to show a more authentic self in front of the world and learn from others doing likewise. (Obviously you can find many who still put a crafted image online, but I’ve found that more people are willing to tell what actually goes on behind the scenes on their blogs than elsewhere.) And i agree i look at pinterest in a whole new light now that i’m a blogger.
xx Avalon from http://www.simplyavalon.com
Yes I agree with that!! Some social media is harder to really show your true self and you’re often swiping away too quickly to really process things. Thanks for reading Avalon! x
Love the attitude of gratitude. That is one of the number one ways to find a person with an abundant mindset. IF the person can find reasons to be GRATEFUL about anything they are way ahead of the pack. Goo job and thanks for the gratitude reinforcement.
Sometimes it’s hard to be in that state of mind but thank you!!
I’m still trying to figure out pinterest! I know I have to work on my strategy lol
I also didn’t know the names of popular brands when I started my blog, how far we’ve come!
Right?! I feel like it’ll take me ages before I can fully understand and do it right. It’s amazing to see how much we progress!
I also love discovering new travel places through other blogs and it’s so fun to connect with people who love doing the same things as you.
http://www.fashionradi.com
Yes! There are a lot of places I didn’t really know about, so it was such a great learning experience!
i love the newbury girl, i started following her on ig and love her content on her blog. i like how you included bloggers in this post. a few are people i am familiar with. the blogging community never fails to amaze me, it feels great to be apart of a community that is so supportive and so creative!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts doll. I think one thing i didn’t fully understand the importance of before blogging were the disclosure and privacy pages.
Have a great weekend!
xx, Des | https://www.itsbetterinheels.com/
Isn’t she so awesome?! Her posts are always so informative and I always learn new brands of beauty products from her. The blogging community is truly wonderful. I still struggle to fully grasp the legal parts of it and hopefully I will catch on to it soon. Thanks for reading Des!
The blogging community is super helpful! I’ve certainly learned a lot from other bloggers: travel tips, games, life hacks, beauty companies…basically everything. I agree that it’s comforting to see other people who experience similar health/mental health problems too. It makes you feel like you’re not alone, and usually gives advice on how to cope. I’m really glad I started blogging!
Yes! Soo many, I can’t count them all. It’s so much easier talking to people online about random things like these and not feel like a weirdo. It’s def a blessing!
Ilove this Geraldine!! I have to say, I love the way your blog looks!!! the layout is so, so pretty! I can understand so many of the things on this list. I had no idea about a lot of this before blogging. Especially the pinterest one. I had no idea how important pinterest was for bloggers!
Aw that m you so much Colleen I’m so glad you like it! Blogging has opened such a big world to New things!
Great post!
I’ve learned a lot from reading different types of blog posts. Some of my favorite to read are about traveling overseas. The only place I’ve been outside the US is Canada. So it’s fun to see what the rest of the world has to offer.
Haha for sure, you and I haven’t traveled to many places yet but maybe someday! Traveling is definitely a great topic to read 🙂
